On May 14th London’s Scala nightclub will play host to 24 pretty unconventional pin-ups and beauties with bite, as they compete to claim the title of ‘Miss Alternative UK 2011’. Judged by a panel of alt. celebrities, punctuated by burlesque, twisted cabaret and sideshow-style performances, and followed by an all-night afterparty, the live final of this fresh new modeling competition is set to be a celebration of subcultural style… and one hell of a night out!
Open to any female UK resident over 18, who can confidently say she has the look, lifestyle and attitude to represent the nation’s alternative scene, the inaugural Miss Alternative UK has attracted entrants from across the country. Three months of online public voting, closing on April 14th, will decide which of the tattooed, pierced, mohawked, dreadlocked, leather & latex clad hopefuls take part in the live finals a month later. On the night, the 24 finalists will be put through their paces onstage in four competitions, including a catwalk show, talent contest and interview.
Charged with the task of eliminating entrants at each hurdle is an alt. all-star judging panel, comprised of internationally published fetish and fashion model Masuimi Max, Steven Severin of goth / punk pioneers ‘Siouxsie and the Banshees’, body mod guru and extreme performer Samppa von Cyborg and Die So Fluid‘s latex-clad front woman Grog. Whilst the judges deliberate after each round, shows from The McCarricks, Lydia Darling, Sophia Landi, Transmutant and British Heart will ensure the 1,000 capacity Scala is kept entertained and in suspense until the overall winner is crowned at midnight.
In addition to her title for the next 12 months, ‘Miss Alternative UK 2011’ will receive a prize package including magazine cover and calendar photo shoots, VIP club entry for one year and a custom couture outfit – all courtesy of event sponsors Handjobs Media, Emerald Angel, Devolution Magazine, Alt Fashion magazine, Prong Jewellery, Club Rub, PhotosWithAttitude, Marcus T and Club AntiChrist.
Following the crowning, revellers and runners-up are invited to stay and party in the company of an eclectic bill of DJs and a host of weird and wonderful walkabout acts, for Miss Alternative UK’s marathon after party (“The Alternative Ball”). Celebrations kick off immediately after the winner is crowned with a set from a special guest band (to be announced March 6th – stay tuned), and run right through to 6am!
