Calling 1940s Lingerie Lovers – New Photo Book from What Katie Did

By on February 12, 2010

“A Serious Study of Mid-20th Century Lingerie” is a super new photo book, oozing with sexy retro images of lingerie, stockings, corsets and high heels…

There are 100 A4 pages and around 100 large colour photos by Tony Nylons, who clearly loves his work. It’s done with a lovely balance of style – always very sexy, but not porny or sleazy. If you like images of women in sexy ’40s lingerie, buy this book.
Mid-20th-Century-LingerieAs well as the photos, there’s a lot of serious content. There has been a big increase in enthusiasm for ’40s and’50s fashion in recent years and What Katie Did sell the underwear online, at shows and in their London store. Their book gives you a lot of reference as to what was worn underneath during this period. It’s a great source of costume ideas, charting the history of stockings, the pin-up girls of the ’40s and ’50s and the exotic fetish scene which launched icons like Bettie Page.

The book is divided into five sections: lingerie, shapewear, stockings, pin-up and exotic. Playful cheesecake pin-up is interspersed with old Hollywood glamour and rounded out with the darker, more fetishistic shots; all featuring the UK’s top burlesque artistes and pin-up models. Charlotte Thomson’s delightful illustrations pepper the pages, making this book a must-see for fans of lingerie, fashion history, photography and ’40s design.

The models in the book look fabulous – they are all genuine enthusiasts and this lends the whole thing a strong feeling of reality. Even some of the vintage vehicles in the photos were restored by Katie’s husband!

So, whether you want to dress in ’40s style and look great – or whether you just like the pictures –  we absolutely recommend “Serious Study of Mid-20th Century Lingerie.” Price £23.99 inc p&p UK, from the What Katie Did website

Since Katie Halford launched What Katie Did ten years ago, her vintage lingerie has appeared in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Look, Pop and many more; even men’s magazine Esquire recently featured Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley in a bullet bra.
