Lace up with lace – New corsets from Axfords

By on May 19, 2010

You’ve probably seen one of Axfords’ corsets recently even if you didn’t know it – they’ve been making beautiful, top quality corsets for years, worn by pop stars, actors and other celebrities; Girls Aloud have recently worn Axfords on stage and you’ll catch several of their corsets on the national tour of the Rocky Horror Show. Currently starring on Saturday night TV are Axfords waist cinchers in Over the Rainbow worn by the Dorothy hopefuls.

There’s red satin with black lace over it, ivory with a layer of ivory lace, white satin with black lace and some stunning white and pink designs.

There are styles in plain satin with lace trim, too and the website includes a huge range of super quality corsets, including leather and even corsets for men.

The Brighton based firm is known for producing corsets that look great and last. This is as far as you can get from a sex shop basque made from cheap material that frays and runs after one outing! Each Axfords corset is made by a dedicated corsetiere, using steel boning, cotton satin, butter soft leather or PVC, with cotton lining to keep you cool in the hottest club or situation. Even the laces feel different, smooth to the touch and running freely through the reinforced metal eyelets.

Whether you want to do some serious body re-shaping, or just want a corset to wear out clubbing, Axfords will find the right style and size for you “We spend a lot of time talking to our customers, making sure we know what they want before they buy,” says Michael Hammond, who has owned and run Axfords for the past twenty five years. “Corsets are different from other lingerie – you always wear at least one size down from your normal size, and you might end up with a corset that is two, four or even six inches smaller than your natural waist. And if once you’ve tried it on, you’re not happy with the corset, we will exchange it, or give you a full refund.”

All this quality and service comes at a remarkably fair price – the best selling style, a sweetheart neckline satin corset, sells at £125, and you can pick up a full body leather corset for £250. Waist cinchers are £95 to £120.

Axfords corsets come in a huge choice of colours, from gothic style black lace over red satin to subtle variations of ivory and white – “We sell to a lot of brides,” says Michael Hammond, “some of whom want the kink and kick of wearing a corset on the day, but in something more muted, that’s suitably bridal, and others want the vintage look of our ivory/white styles.”

The full range is available on, or call Michael on 01273 32794 for personal advice. If you are visiting Brighton, you can drop in – the factory is just two minutes from the station.
