BOUND – The UK's First Japanese Bondage Show, Play and Social Night

By on June 25, 2012

BOUND is a regular monthly event to inspire enthusiasts of Japanese rope bondage (aka shibari or kinbaku) and increase the awareness of the general public of this increasingly popular performance art (and means of erotic communication).

It is more than a passionate dance with rope; there are spectacular aerial displays, and a strong element of SM, in line with the Japanese concept of ‘beautiful suffering’. Says the organiser, Bruce, aka Esinem, “We are committed to bringing shibari out of the shadows and into the mainstream of alternative art where it undoubtedly has a place. The mission of this night is to show that shibari is a million miles from the image of the bound secretary or damsel in distress that the word ‘bondage’ usually brings to the public’s mind.”

The event was created by internationally renowned performer and teacher Esinem in conjunction with The Flying Dutchman (a cool new venue in South London) and artist/model Nina Russ.

BOUND provides an environment where skills can be exchanged, a platform for new talent to cut their teeth or old hands show off their skills and a friendly atmosphere in which to socialise.

The next event is on 6 July at The Flying Dutchman, 156 Wells Way, London SE5 7SY. 7pm – 1 am. Tickets £10 in advance, £15 on the door. The following event is on 3rd August and then from September it’s on the third Friday of each month.

Mia Maya Yaya and Nawakiri Shin, who starred at Toubaku, Japan’s first international festival of kinbaku, both from Taiwan, will be performing. Mai Maya Yaya is also coming with Shin and she will be doing a self suspension show. Hedwig, JackWhipper, Nina and, we hope, WykD_Dave and Clover will also take to the stage.
