Behind The Whip, by Maria Coletsis – Major New Dominatrix Book

By on April 20, 2011

Canadian photographer Maria Coletsis traveled the world to compile this hardcover coffee table book of portraits of top professional dominatrixes in Berlin, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Sydney, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Bangkok and London. We’ve all seen photos of dominant women in leather and rubber before – but Coletsis goes far beyond just presenting some nice snapshots of dominant women in sexy outfits.

Behind The Whip concentrates on pro doms with a story to tell. How they got into this line of work, what it means to them, how they relate to their clients, what their families think, how the work relates to their personal sexuality, do they enjoy it. do they ever switch off… and so forth.

The photos are not all the obvious poses. We see the professionals off duty, laughing over an anecdote, drinking tea between clients, their facade set aside for a while as they chat with Maria. The book is not just pictures, though – the brief interviews with each woman are essential reading.

Vanessa talks of regular clients she’s been seeing for ten years or more. Scarlet tells how she got started and how she feels involved in the BDSM world, Silvia has no regrets at leaving the law for the dungeon. Decima used to be a drama teacher, ran a house of domination and now lectures to young Chinese students in Hong Kong. Want to know more about these women and their world? You will if you buy this book.

Inside each book is a hidden treasure – a DVD with a 28-minute documentary film about the making of the book. It makes no pretence at high technical quality, but that’s no problem. Being female and unburdened by a professional film crew, Maria gets the doms relaxed and chatting revealingly. Compare with the film ‘Pandora’s Box’ by Nick Broomfield on the eponymous New York house of domination and you’ll see that Maria’s more insightful production tells you far more about the women who work as pro doms and about their world. (It’s possible to buy the book on it’s own from stores, but order online and get the DVD as well – it’s worth it.)
